The life of Prof. Tai Jingnong (1902–1990) is almost a microcosm of the generation of scholars and writers who moved to Taiwan in the mid-twentieth century. After arriving in Taiwan in 1946, he joined the Department of Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University as a professor and later served as its chair. Over his 27 years of teaching, he nurtured countless talents. Prof. Tai was simultaneously a literary scholar, educator, and calligrapher. Deeply concerned with his country and society, he composed poems, essays, and novels, while also expressing his pursuit of culture and aesthetics through his calligraphy. He has had a profound impact on the development of the humanities and arts in Taiwan, and the title on the official website of National Taiwan University is based on his calligraphy.
When Prof. Tai Jingnong was teaching at NTU, he never crossed paths with No. 25 Wenzhou Street. Originally built in 1935-1940 as a private residence for high-ranking Japanese officials and scholars, the Japanese-style building became a dormitory for NTU faculty and staff after the war, and in May 1990, after 17 years of retirement, Prof. Tai Jingnong moved into the building, where he lived for only six months before passing away at the age of 78, a short-lived but culturally significant building that was registered as a memorial building in June 2020, and which is still in use today. Although it was a short time ago, the building was endowed with profound cultural significance, and in June 2020, it was registered as a memorial building, recognizing the academic status of Tai Jingnong and the historical value of the building.
